UNITE 2006 - A SYNOPSIS
This year’s Africa Unite Symposium
was held in Accra, Ghana on the 6th of
February at the International Trade Fair Conference Center.
The theme of this year’s symposium was Bob
Marley, the Man and His music.
In the tradition of Africa Unite we were once again fortunate
to have several high-powered speakers in attendance, namely
Professor Tony Martin of Wellesley College, Professor Carolyn
Cooper of the University of the West Indies, famed poet
and philosopher Mutaburaka of Jamaica, Professor Kwabena
Nketia of the University of Legon and Professor Matt Jensen
of the Berklee School of Music. We were fortunate to have
with us also Honourable Mr. Jake Obetsie-Lamptey, Minister
of Tourism and the Modernization of the Capital as well
as many other distinguished guests.
Dr Eleanor Wint (Director RMF) welcomed and acknowledged
our special guests. A Special dynamic and scintillating
Greeting and Opening Address was given by Ms. Doneisha Prendergast
(first granddaughter). She spoke of the need for us to know
ourselves and to have the energy to get up and do something,
despite all the odds.
The conference was very well attended
by a cross-section of the Ghanaian community (mainly male)
which included students, teachers, ministers, community
organizers, journalist and musicians. Ivory Coast, Senegal,
Benin, Burkina Faso, Togo, Jamaica and USA nationals were
in attendance at the conference
